Switching to Theory7 and would rather not move your website and email yourself? With our migration service, we do the work. You fill in one form, and we move your website, email accounts and DNS records to our servers. In this article you'll read what the service does, what details you need and how to submit your request.

1. What does the migration service do?

For each domain, you indicate what needs to be moved. We take care of:

  • Websites: files and database, including settings, themes and plugins
  • Email accounts: your mailboxes, including folder structure
  • DNS records: so everything keeps working after the move

Do you have multiple domains? Then you add them in the same form and choose per domain what needs to be moved.

What you do yourself

We don't transfer your domain name through this form; you arrange that yourself. Only do so after we have moved your website and email. You can read more about this in step 6.

2. Is the migration service included in your plan?

The migration service is included from the Basic plan upward. The number of hours increases with your plan:

  • Mini and Starter: not included
  • Basic: free, 1 hour
  • Medium: free, 1.5 hours
  • Deluxe: free, 2 hours
  • Ultimate: free, 2.5 hours
  • Reseller hosting: included

Do you have Mini or Starter? Then you can move your website yourself, or choose a higher plan so the migration is done for you. At the bottom of this article you'll find the guides to do it yourself.

3. What details do you need?

We need access to your current hosting environment. Collect the following per domain:

For your website

  • The domain name that needs to be moved
  • The address of your control panel at your current provider, for example https://panel.yourprovider.nl
  • Your FTP or SFTP details: connection type, host, port, username and password

For your email

  • The email address, for example name@yourdomain.nl
  • The mail server of your current provider, for example mail.yourprovider.nl
  • The port (usually 993 for IMAP) and the password of that account

Can't figure it out? Contact your current hosting provider and ask for the details needed for a migration.

4. How to submit your request

  • Log in to your account at https://my.theory7.net
  • Go to the migration form: https://my.theory7.net/siteswitch.php
  • Enter the domain name and choose what needs to be moved: the website, the email, or both
  • Enter the details from step 3. If you have multiple domains, add an extra tab for each domain
  • Put any special requirements in the Opmerkingen (Comments) field, for example a webshop that needs to be taken offline at a specific time
  • Agree to the use of your details for the migration and click Verhuisverzoek indienen (Submit migration request)

You don't need to send your details by email or in a ticket. Everything we need is in this form.

5. What happens next?

After your request, we schedule the migration and keep you informed. A website migration takes 1 to 2 business days on average, depending on how complex your website is.

Is your old hosting still online and does your domain still point to that old server? Then the move happens without downtime: your old site simply stays reachable while we set up and check the copy on our servers. We don't change anything in your old environment.

6. Important: transfer your domain name only afterwards

Only start the transfer of your domain name after we have moved your website and email addresses. If you do it the other way around, your domain points to an environment that isn't ready yet, and your website and email will be temporarily offline.

Frequently asked questions

I don't see the form. Why is that?

The migration form becomes visible as soon as you have an active hosting plan with us. If you only have a domain name with us, you won't see the form yet. First order the hosting plan you want to move to, then submit the request.

Can I have multiple websites moved at the same time?

Yes. You add a tab for each domain and indicate per domain what needs to be moved.

Will my current website stay online during the migration?

Yes. We make a copy and leave your old environment untouched. Only when everything works on our servers do you switch the domain over.

What if my migration takes more time than the hours in my plan?

If it goes beyond the hours in your plan, we'll contact you before we continue. You won't be faced with a surprise afterwards.
