Is your computer slow? Over time, every computer gets cluttered with temporary files, unused programs, and other junk. In this article, you'll learn how to thoroughly clean up your Windows PC or Mac and make it fast again.

Part 1: Cleaning up Windows

Step 1: Run Disk Cleanup

Windows has a built-in tool to remove temporary files:

  1. Press Windows + S and search for "Disk Cleanup"
  2. Select your C: drive and click OK
  3. Check what you want to delete: Temporary internet files, Temporary files, Recycle Bin, Downloads (check first!)
  4. Click Clean up system files for more options
  5. Click OK and confirm

Step 2: Manage startup programs

Too many startup programs make your computer slow:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Task Manager)
  2. Click on Startup apps
  3. Right-click programs you don't need → Disable

Step 3: Uninstall unused programs

  1. Go to SettingsAppsInstalled apps
  2. Sort by size or last used date
  3. Click on programs you don't use → Uninstall

Part 2: Cleaning up Mac

Step 1: Empty the Trash

Files in Trash still take up space. Right-click the Trash → Empty Trash.

Step 2: Manage storage

  1. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac
  2. Click StorageManage
  3. Use the recommendations to free up space

Step 3: Remove unused apps

  1. Open FinderApplications
  2. Drag unused apps to the Trash
  3. Empty the Trash

What can you safely delete?

  • ✅ Temporary files

  • ✅ Downloads you no longer need
  • ✅ Recycle Bin / Trash
  • ✅ Old Windows updates
  • ❌ System files (let Windows handle these)
  • ❌ Program folders in Program Files
