Why bank on your phone with the ING app?

The ING Bankieren app lets you handle all your banking from your smartphone or tablet. You can check your balance, transfer money, pay bills and much more. Everything you used to do on a computer or at a bank branch, you can now easily do on the go.

In this article we explain step by step how to install and set up the ING app. We also cover the most important features and give tips for safe mobile banking.

What do you need to get started?

Before you can use the ING app, you need to meet a few requirements. Make sure you have the following at hand:

Requirements

  • A checking account with ING
  • Access to Mijn ING (online banking)
  • Your Mijn ING username and password
  • A smartphone or tablet running iOS or Android
  • A working internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)

If you do not have access to Mijn ING yet, you first need to activate it through the ING website or by contacting customer service.

Downloading the ING app

The first step is downloading the official ING Bankieren app. It is important to download the right app to avoid scams.

On an iPhone or iPad

Step 1: Open the App Store on your device.

Step 2: Tap the search icon and type 'ING Bankieren'.

Step 3: Find the app from ING (with the orange lion logo).

Step 4: Tap 'Get' or the cloud icon with an arrow.

Step 5: If prompted, enter your Apple ID password or use Face ID or Touch ID.

Step 6: Wait until the app has downloaded and installed.

On an Android phone or tablet

Step 1: Open the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Tap the search bar and type 'ING Bankieren'.

Step 3: Select the official ING app (look for the orange logo with the lion).

Step 4: Tap 'Install'.

Step 5: Wait until the installation is complete.

The app is free to download. Make sure you only download apps from the official App Store or Play Store.

Activating and setting up the ING app

After downloading, you need to activate the app with your Mijn ING details. Here is how:

Step 1: Open the app

Tap the ING icon to open the app. You will see a welcome screen with information about the app.

Step 2: Start the activation

Tap 'Activeren' (Activate) or 'Aan de slag' (Get started) to begin the activation process.

Step 3: Log in with Mijn ING

Enter your Mijn ING username and password. These are the same details you use for online banking on your computer.

Step 4: Verify your identity

ING asks you to confirm your identity. This can be done in several ways:

  • With a code sent to your mobile number
  • With the ING Scanner and a code on the screen
  • With a code sent to you by mail

Follow the on-screen instructions for the verification method available to you.

Step 5: Create a five-digit code

Choose a five-digit code that you will use to log in to the app from now on. This code is personal and you need to remember it. Do not choose an obvious code such as 12345 or your year of birth.

Step 6: Turn on fingerprint or face recognition

For extra convenience, you can log in with your fingerprint (Touch ID) or face recognition (Face ID). The app asks whether you want to set this up. Tap 'Ja' (Yes) if you find that useful.

Step 7: Take the tour

After activation, the app offers a short tour. It is a good idea to follow it, especially if you are not yet familiar with the app.

The most important features of the ING app

Now that the app is installed, you can use all of its features. Here are the main options.

Checking your balance

Right after opening the app you see the balance of your accounts. You can also view your transaction history to see what has been credited and debited.

Transferring money

With the app you can easily transfer money to others:

  • Tap 'Overmaken' (Transfer) or the plus icon
  • Choose a contact or enter an IBAN
  • Enter the amount and, if you like, a description
  • Check the details and confirm with your code

Sending and receiving payment requests

The ING app has a built-in feature for payment requests, similar to Tikkie. You can use it to easily ask friends or family for money.

Scanning and paying bills

Do you have a payment slip (acceptgiro) or an invoice? With the scan feature you can scan the QR code or the payment reference. The app then fills in all the details automatically, and you only need to confirm.

Adjusting settings

In the app you can adjust various settings:

  • Spending limits for your card
  • Notifications for incoming and outgoing payments
  • The order of your accounts
  • Your personal details

Safe mobile banking

The ING app is very secure, but it is important that you also take precautions yourself. Here are tips for banking safely.

Keep your details secret

Never share your five-digit code, password or login details with anyone. ING will never ask for them by phone, email or text message.

Install updates

Make sure both the ING app and your phone's operating system are always up to date. Updates often include important security improvements.

Use a screen lock

Secure your phone with a passcode, fingerprint or face recognition. That way nobody can get into your banking app if you lose your phone.

Watch out for phishing

Scammers sometimes try to steal your details through fake emails or text messages. ING never asks you to log in through a link. Always open the app yourself or type the web address manually.

Check your transactions regularly

Review your incoming and outgoing payments regularly. Do you see a transaction you do not recognize? Contact ING right away.

Installing the app on a new device

If you get a new phone, you need to install and activate the ING app again. Your old phone is then logged out automatically.

Follow the same steps as for the first installation. You can choose a new five-digit code or keep the same one.

Troubleshooting

Running into problems? Here are solutions for common situations.

You forgot your code

If you have forgotten your five-digit code, you can reset it. Tap 'Code vergeten' (Forgot code) on the login screen and follow the instructions. You will then need to log in again with your Mijn ING details.

The app is not responding

Close the app completely and open it again. On an iPhone, you do this by swiping up and swiping the app away. On Android, tap the square button and swipe the app away.

Error message when logging in

Check that you are entering the correct details and that your internet connection is working. Try again after a few minutes. If the problem persists, contact ING.
