Privacy settings on your smartphone: protect your data
Your smartphone knows a lot about you: your location, your contacts, your photos. In this article, we explain how to protect your privacy on iPhone and Android.
Location settings
iPhone
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Review which apps have access
- Set apps to "While Using" instead of "Always"
- Turn off "Precise Location" where not needed
Android
- Go to Settings → Location
- Tap App location permissions
- Review and adjust per app
App permissions
Check what apps can access:
- Camera
- Microphone
- Contacts
- Photos
- Files
- Digitize old photos with your smartphone
Only grant access when really necessary.
Tracking protection
iPhone (App Tracking Transparency)
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking
- Disable "Allow Apps to Request to Track"
Android
- Settings → Privacy → Ads
- Enable "Opt out of Ads Personalization"
Lock screen privacy
- Hide notification content on lock screen
- Disable "Hey Siri" or "OK Google" on lock screen
- Use a strong PIN or biometrics
Browser privacy
- Use private/incognito mode
- Clear cookies regularly
- Consider a privacy-focused browser like Firefox or Brave
- Use a VPN on public WiFi
Social media privacy
- Review privacy settings regularly
- Limit who can see your posts
- Disable location tagging on photos
- Be careful with third-party apps
