How to create a Gmail account step by step

What do you need?

• A computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection
• A valid phone number (for verification)
• An existing email address (optional, for account recovery)
• 5 to 10 minutes of your time

Creating an account step by step

Step 1: Go to the sign-up page

Open your browser and go to accounts.google.com. Click Create account.

Step 2: Choose the account type

Select For my personal use or For my child if you want to create an account for your child.

Step 3: Enter your details

Enter your first and last name. This name is visible when you send emails.

Step 4: Choose your Gmail address

Choose a username that becomes your email address (e.g. janedoe@gmail.com). Google gives suggestions if the name you chose is already taken.

Step 5: Create a strong password

Create a password of at least 8 characters. Use uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols for extra security.

Step 6: Add recovery information

Enter your phone number for verification. You will receive a text message with a code. Optionally, add a recovery email address.

Step 7: Complete the sign-up

Check your details, accept the terms and click Create account. Your Gmail is now ready to use!

Securing your account

Turning on 2-Step Verification

1. Go to myaccount.google.com/security
2. Click 2-Step Verification
3. Follow the instructions to link your phone number
4. Choose text message codes or the Google Authenticator app

With 2-Step Verification, nobody can sign in to your account, not even with your password.

First steps after creating your account

• Add a profile picture: Click your initials at the top right and upload a photo
• Install the Gmail app: Download the Gmail app on your phone for notifications
• Import contacts: Import contacts from an old email account
• Set up a signature: Go to Settings > Signature for an automatic sign-off

Can I change my Gmail address later? No, your Gmail address cannot be changed after it has been created. You can add an alias or create a new account.
