Introduction: Why does your computer start up slowly?

A computer that is slow to start up is one of the most common and frustrating problems. Where your PC was once ready to use in a few seconds, it now takes minutes before you can finally get to work. This problem becomes more common as your computer gets older, but fortunately there are many effective solutions.

Managing startup programs

One of the biggest culprits behind a slow startup time is programs that start automatically with Windows.

Disabling startup programs in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Click the Startup tab
  3. You now see a list of all programs that start automatically
  4. Look at the Startup impact column
  5. Right-click programs you do not need right away and choose Disable

Which programs can you safely disable?

Safe to disable:

  • Spotify, iTunes and other music players
  • Adobe Reader and other PDF readers
  • Microsoft Teams (if you do not need it all the time)
  • Game launchers such as Steam, Epic Games or Origin

Do not disable:

  • Antivirus software
  • Drivers for your graphics card
  • Windows Security

Turning on Fast Startup

Windows has a feature called Fast Startup that can significantly shorten the startup time.

Activating Fast Startup

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options
  3. On the left, click Choose what the power buttons do
  4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  5. Check Turn on fast startup
  6. Click Save changes

SSD vs HDD: The biggest upgrade

If your computer still has a traditional hard disk drive (HDD), upgrading to an SSD is the most effective way to drastically shorten your startup time.

Feature HDD SSD
Startup time 30-120 seconds 10-20 seconds
Read/write speed 80-160 MB/s 500-7000 MB/s

Optimizing BIOS/UEFI settings

Your BIOS or UEFI contains settings that affect the startup time.

Settings to check

  1. Optimize the boot order: Make sure your primary drive is at the top
  2. Turn on Fast Boot: Skips hardware checks
  3. Disable unnecessary hardware: Turn off unused ports

Disk Cleanup and system maintenance

Windows Disk Cleanup

  1. Open File Explorer and right-click your C: drive
  2. Choose Properties > Disk Cleanup
  3. Click Clean up system files
  4. Check: Temporary files, Windows Update Cleanup
  5. Click OK

Checking for malware and viruses

Malware can seriously slow down your system. Run a full scan with Windows Security regularly.

Reinstalling Windows: the last resort

If none of the solutions above work, a clean installation of Windows may be the solution.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How long should a computer normally take to start up?

With a modern SSD and Windows 10/11, a computer should be fully started within 15-30 seconds. With a traditional HDD, 45-90 seconds is acceptable.

Can too little RAM also cause a slow startup?

Yes, insufficient memory can slow down startup. For Windows 10/11, at least 8 GB of RAM is recommended.

Is it safe to leave Fast Startup turned on all the time?

For most users, Fast Startup is safe and useful. Turn it off on dual-boot systems or if you have problems with Windows Updates.
