DigiD: apply, log in and troubleshoot (Netherlands)
DigiD is the digital identity system used in the Netherlands to access government services online. In this article, we explain how to apply for DigiD, how to use it, and how to solve common problems.

What is DigiD?
DigiD (Digital Identity) lets you prove who you are when accessing Dutch government websites, such as:
- Tax authority (Belastingdienst)
- Municipality services
- Health insurance
- Pension funds
- And many more
How to apply for DigiD
- Go to digid.nl
- Click Apply for DigiD
- Enter your BSN (citizen service number)
- Choose username and password
- You'll receive an activation code by mail (takes about 3 days)
- Activate your DigiD with the code
DigiD app
The DigiD app provides extra security and convenience:
- Log in with your fingerprint or face
- Scan ID document to activate
- Higher security level for sensitive services
Common problems
Forgot password
Go to digid.nl → "I forgot my password" → Request a new one by mail or through the app.
Locked account
After too many failed attempts, your account is locked. Request an unlock code via digid.nl.
Didn't receive activation letter
Wait at least 5 business days. Still nothing? Request a new code via digid.nl.
