How to delete your X (Twitter) account

Introduction

Have you decided to delete your X account (formerly Twitter)? Deleting it is a two-step process: first you deactivate the account, and after 30 days it is permanently deleted.

Downloading your archive

Through the X website

1. Go to x.com and log in
2. Click More > Settings and Support > Settings and privacy
3. Go to Your account > Download an archive of your data
4. Enter your password
5. Click Request archive
6. Wait for the email (24-48 hours) and download the archive

Deactivating your account through the website

1. Go to x.com and log in
2. Click More > Settings and Support > Settings and privacy
3. Click Your account
4. Click Deactivate your account
5. Read the information and click Deactivate
6. Enter your password and confirm

Deactivating your account through the app

iPhone and Android

1. Open the X app
2. Tap your profile picture
3. Go to Settings and Support > Settings and privacy
4. Tap Your account
5. Select Deactivate your account
6. Confirm with your password

The 30-day waiting period

• Your account becomes invisible immediately
• You can log in at any time to restore it
• After 30 days, all data is permanently deleted
• Your username becomes available to others

Restoring your account

1. Go to x.com
2. Log in with your old credentials
3. Click Yes, reactivate

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete it right away without waiting 30 days?

No, X enforces a mandatory 30-day waiting period. It cannot be sped up.

What happens to my tweets?

As soon as you deactivate, your tweets become invisible. After 30 days they are permanently deleted.

Can I use the same username again?

Yes, but only after your old account has been completely deleted. There is no guarantee that nobody else will claim the name.
