How to make Instagram Reels: step-by-step guide
Instagram Reels are short, entertaining videos that you can create and share with your followers. This feature has become hugely popular and is a great way to get creative and reach more people. In this guide, we explain step by step how to make your own Instagram Reels.
What are Instagram Reels?
Instagram Reels are short videos of up to 90 seconds that you can add music, effects and text to. They are similar to TikTok videos and appear in a special Reels tab on your profile and on Instagram's Explore page. Reels are an excellent way to gain new followers because they are seen by far more people than regular posts.
Why are Reels so popular?
Reels are popular because they are short and punchy. People today have shorter attention spans and want to be entertained quickly. With Reels you can tell a story, share something funny or give useful tips in just a few seconds. On top of that, Instagram itself actively pushes Reels, so you get more reach than with regular photos or videos.
Before you start
Before you make your first Reel, it helps to prepare a few things. Make sure you have the latest version of the Instagram app installed. Check this in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). An outdated app can mean certain features aren't available.
What do you need?
- A smartphone with a good camera
- The Instagram app (latest version)
- Enough light for your recording
- An idea for your video
- Optionally, a tripod for steady shots
Making a Reel step by step
Now let's actually make a Reel. Follow the steps below and you'll have your first Reel ready within minutes.
Step 1: Open the Reels camera
Open the Instagram app and tap the plus sign (+) at the bottom of the screen. You'll now see several options. Choose "Reel". You can also swipe left from your home screen to get to the camera and select "Reels" at the bottom.
Step 2: Choose your settings
On the left side of your screen you'll see several options:
- Audio: This is where you can add music to your Reel. Tap it to search for a song. You can also select the part you want to use.
- Length: Choose how long your Reel should be (15, 30, 60 or 90 seconds).
- Speed: This lets you speed up or slow down your video.
- Effects: Add fun filters and effects to your video.
- Timer: Set a countdown timer so you can record hands-free.
Step 3: Record your video
Press and hold the record button to film. Release it to stop. You can record several clips in a row, and they are automatically merged. This is called "recording clips" and gives you lots of creative freedom.
Tip: Use the timer if you need both hands for your video. Set the timer, tap the record button and you have 3 or 10 seconds to get into position.
Step 4: Edit your Reel
When you're done filming, tap "Next". Now you can edit your Reel further:
- Add text: Tap the text icon to place text over your video. You can change the font, the color and the position.
- Stickers: Add stickers, GIFs or emojis to make your video more fun.
- Draw: Use the pencil to draw on your video.
- Voiceover: Record your own voice over the video.
Step 5: Share your Reel
Happy with it? Then tap "Next" again. Now you can add a caption, tag people and use hashtags. Also choose a cover photo that will be shown on your profile. Finally, tap "Share" to publish your Reel.
Tips for better Reels
Now that you know how to make a Reel, here are some tips to make your videos even better.
Use trending audio
Audio that is popular on Instagram can give your Reel a boost. You can recognize trending audio by the small arrow next to the audio name. When lots of people use the same audio, there's a better chance your Reel will be seen too.
Start with a strong opening
The first few seconds are crucial. Start your Reel with something eye-catching to hold viewers' attention. This could be a question, a striking image or a promise of what's to come.
Keep it simple
Don't try to cram too much into one Reel. Focus on one message or idea. This makes your video clearer and easier to follow.
Pay attention to image quality
Good lighting makes a huge difference. Ideally film in natural light, or make sure you have enough lamps. Also make sure your camera lens is clean for sharp footage.
Be authentic
People value authenticity. You don't have to be a professional videographer to make great Reels. Be yourself and share what you find interesting or fun.
Avoiding common mistakes
There are a few pitfalls that beginners often fall into. Knowing them helps you avoid them.
Intros that are too long
Jump straight into the action. Long intros make people swipe away before they get to the interesting part.
Poor audio quality
If you talk in your Reel, make sure your voice can be heard clearly. Avoid places with a lot of background noise.
Too much text
Too much text on the screen is hard to read and distracts from your video. Keep text short and to the point.
Analyzing your Reels
Instagram provides statistics for your Reels. Go to your Reel and tap "View insights". Here you can see how many people viewed, liked and shared your Reel. Use this information to learn what works and what doesn't.
Key statistics
- Views: How many times your Reel was watched
- Likes: How many people liked your Reel
- Comments: The number of comments on your Reel
- Saves: How many people saved your Reel
- Shares: How often your Reel was sent on to others
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a Reel after I've posted it?
No, you can't edit the video itself after publishing. You can, however, change the caption, hashtags and location. If you want to change the video, you have to delete the Reel and make it again.
How long does it take before my Reel is visible?
Your Reel is visible to your followers right away. However, it can take a few hours to days before your Reel is picked up by the algorithm and shown to more people through the Explore page.
Can I use music in my Reels?
Yes, Instagram has an extensive music library that you can use for free. Keep in mind that some music isn't available for business accounts because of copyright.
How many Reels should I post per week?
There's no fixed number, but consistency is important. Start with 2-3 Reels per week and see what works for you. Quality matters more than quantity. It's better to make a few good Reels than lots of mediocre ones.
