What is Tikkie and how does it work?

Tikkie is a popular payment app that lets you easily send payment requests to friends, family or colleagues. The app was developed by ABN AMRO, but it works with all Dutch bank accounts. Millions of people in the Netherlands use Tikkie every day to split small amounts, such as a shared lunch or a gift.

Sometimes you want to cancel a payment request you sent, or remind the recipient about an open Tikkie. In this article we explain exactly how to do this and answer frequently asked questions about managing your Tikkies.

Canceling a Tikkie payment request

Did you accidentally enter the wrong amount or send a Tikkie to the wrong person? No worries, you can cancel a payment request. Below we explain how this works.

When can you cancel a Tikkie?

You can only cancel a Tikkie if it has not been paid yet. As soon as someone has paid the payment request, it can no longer be canceled. In that case you have to pay the amount back to the person yourself.

A Tikkie expires automatically after 14 days if no payment has been made. After this period you do not have to do anything, the request disappears on its own.

Canceling a Tikkie step by step

Follow these steps to cancel an open payment request:

Step 1: Open the Tikkie app on your phone.

Step 2: Tap 'Activiteit' (Activity) at the bottom of the screen to open your overview.

Step 3: Find the payment request you want to cancel. Open Tikkies are at the top of the list.

Step 4: Tap the payment request to open the details.

Step 5: Scroll down and tap 'Tikkie annuleren' (Cancel Tikkie) or 'Verwijderen' (Delete).

Step 6: Confirm that you want to cancel the request.

The recipient does not get a notification that you canceled the payment request. The Tikkie simply disappears from their overview.

What if the cancel button is not there?

If you do not see the option to cancel, this can have several causes:

  • The payment request has already been paid
  • The Tikkie has already expired (older than 14 days)
  • You are looking at a payment request that you received yourself
  • There is a technical problem with the app

In that last case, try closing the app and opening it again, or check whether an update is available.

Sending a reminder for an open Tikkie

Sometimes people simply forget to pay a Tikkie. In that case you can send a friendly reminder. Tikkie makes this very easy.

How do you send a reminder?

Follow these steps to remind someone about an open payment request:

Step 1: Open the Tikkie app.

Step 2: Go to 'Activiteit' at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3: Tap the open payment request you want to send a reminder for.

Step 4: Tap 'Herinnering sturen' (Send reminder) or the bell icon.

Step 5: Choose how you want to send the reminder (WhatsApp, SMS or another app).

Step 6: Adjust the message if you like and send the reminder.

The recipient then gets a new message with a link to the open payment request.

Tips for sending reminders

Reminding someone about money can sometimes feel awkward. Here are a few tips:

  • Wait a few days before you send a reminder
  • Keep the tone friendly and understanding
  • Do not send too many reminders in a row
  • Keep in mind that people have often genuinely forgotten

Tikkie sends a friendly message by default, so you do not need to worry about the wording.

Viewing an overview of all your Tikkies

It is useful to check regularly which Tikkies are still open. That way you keep track of what you are still owed.

Viewing open Tikkies

In the Tikkie app you will find a complete overview of all your payment requests under 'Activiteit'. Here you can see:

  • Open Tikkies (not paid yet)
  • Paid Tikkies
  • Expired Tikkies
  • Tikkies you received yourself

For each payment request you can see the amount, the recipient and the status. That way you know exactly what is still open.

Exporting your Tikkie history

For your own records you can download an overview of your Tikkies. This is especially useful if you use Tikkie for business or want to keep track of your spending.

To do this, go to the settings in the app and look for the export function. You can then download an overview for a specific period.

Solving problems with Tikkie

Sometimes you run into problems when canceling requests or sending reminders. Here are solutions for common problems.

The app does not work properly

If the Tikkie app does not work properly, try the following:

  • Close the app completely and open it again
  • Check that your internet connection works
  • Check the App Store or Play Store to see whether an update is available
  • Delete the app and install it again

When you reinstall, you do have to log in again with your bank account.

The payment request does not arrive

If the recipient says they have not received your Tikkie:

  • Check that you used the correct phone number
  • Ask the recipient to check their spam folder
  • Send the payment request again using a different method (for example WhatsApp instead of SMS)

The wrong amount was paid

If someone accidentally paid the wrong amount, Tikkie cannot reverse this. You have to sort it out between yourselves by paying back the difference or sending a new Tikkie for the remaining amount.

Tikkie for business use

Tikkie also offers a business version for entrepreneurs and small businesses. With it you can send payment requests to customers, for example for small purchases or services.

The business version has extra features, such as adding your company logo and sending payment requests by email. Contact your bank for more information about Tikkie for business.

Privacy and security

Tikkie takes your privacy seriously. A few important points about the security of the app:

  • Your bank details are not shared with recipients
  • Payment requests expire automatically after 14 days
  • The app uses the same security as online banking
  • You can secure the app with a PIN code or fingerprint

Always make sure you download the app from the official App Store or Google Play Store to avoid fake apps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel a Tikkie after it has been paid?

No, a Tikkie can only be canceled as long as it has not been paid yet. If someone has already paid and you want to give the money back, you have to make a payment to that person yourself. You can also send a Tikkie back for this, with a message saying that it is a refund.

How many reminders can I send for a Tikkie?

There is no limit on the number of reminders you can send. However, it is wise to be restrained about this. If someone still has not paid after two or three reminders, it is better to contact them personally and ask whether there is a problem.

What happens to a Tikkie if I delete the app?

If you delete the Tikkie app, your open payment requests remain. They are linked to your bank account, not to the app. When you reinstall the app and log in, you will see all your Tikkies again. Open payment requests still expire automatically after 14 days.

Can I change the amount of a Tikkie?

No, you cannot change the amount of a Tikkie you have sent. If you entered the wrong amount, you have to cancel the payment request and create a new Tikkie with the correct amount. Do this before the recipient pays the wrong amount.
