Backing up Windows 10

Making a backup in Windows 10 protects you against hardware failures, viruses and human error.

Method 1: File History

Step 1: Connect an external drive

Connect an external hard drive or USB stick.

Step 2: Open File History

  1. Click Start
  2. Go to Settings > Update & Security
  3. Select Backup

Step 3: Add a backup drive

  1. Click Add a drive
  2. Select your external drive

Method 2: Create a system image

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
  3. Click Create a system image
  4. Select a storage location
  5. Click Start backup

Method 3: OneDrive cloud backup

  1. Click the OneDrive icon
  2. Select Settings > Backup
  3. Click Manage backup
  4. Select folders
  5. Click Start backup
