The elephant in the room: cPanel pricing
In June 2019, what is now known as cPanel-gate happened. cPanel changed their pricing model overnight. Where you previously paid a fixed license per server (around $15/month regardless of the number of accounts), it became a tiered model based on the number of accounts:
- Solo (1 account): ~$15/month
- Admin (5 accounts): ~$21/month
- Pro (30 accounts): ~$30/month
- Premier (100 accounts): ~$45/month - and above that you pay extra per account
For resellers this was a disaster. A server with 200 customer accounts went from $15 to $65+ per month, just for the license. Many hosting companies switched to DirectAdmin, Plesk or other alternatives because of this.
DirectAdmin, meanwhile, stayed stably priced:
- Personal (up to 10 accounts): ~€2/month
- Lite (unlimited accounts): ~€5/month
- Standard (unlimited, multiple admins): ~€7.50/month
The price difference is enormous. With 100+ accounts, cPanel quickly costs you €40-50 per month more than DirectAdmin. That amount comes straight out of your profit margin. For a reseller who counts every euro, this is a serious consideration.

WHM (Web Host Manager)
WHM is the reseller part of cPanel and is downright powerful. It offers extensive options for account management, plan definitions, DNS templates, branding and more. WHM is arguably the most complete reseller interface available.
More third-party integrations
Because of its large market share, more external tools and plugins support cPanel out of the box. Think of migration tools, security plugins, caching solutions and monitoring software. The ecosystem around cPanel is simply larger.
WordPress Toolkit
cPanel offers an integrated WordPress Toolkit with which you can manage, update and secure WordPress installations. This is a handy feature for resellers with many WordPress customers. DirectAdmin offers comparable functionality via Softaculous, but cPanel's WordPress Toolkit is a bit more refined.
Larger community
More users means more forums, tutorials, YouTube videos and Stack Overflow answers. If you run into a problem, there is a greater chance that someone has already solved and documented it.
Feature-by-feature comparison
File management
Both panels have a built-in file manager. cPanel's is more advanced, with features such as archive extraction, code editing with syntax highlighting and group operations. The DirectAdmin file manager covers the basics - upload, download, edit, move - but is simpler. In practice, most serious users use FTP or SSH, which makes the file manager less relevant.
Email management
cPanel offers more email options: forwarders, autoresponders, mailing lists, email routing and SpamAssassin with detailed configuration. DirectAdmin offers the essential email functions - accounts, forwarders, autoresponders, spam filtering - but with fewer configuration options. For most small-business customers, DirectAdmin's offering is more than enough.
DNS management
Both panels offer full DNS zone editing. cPanel has the DNS Zone Editor, which is a bit clearer for beginners. DirectAdmin offers direct zone file editing, which is powerful for advanced users but less user-friendly for beginners. Both support DNSSEC.
Backups
cPanel offers JetBackup as a premium add-on (popular but at an extra cost) and built-in full/incremental backups. DirectAdmin has built-in backup functionality that works well, including scheduled backups and the option for users to manage their own backups. Resource monitoring
cPanel shows detailed resource statistics per account: bandwidth, disk usage, CPU and memory usage (via CloudLinux integration). DirectAdmin offers basic statistics for bandwidth and disk usage. Combined with CloudLinux (which Theory7 uses), comparable resource limits and monitoring are available.
SSL management
Both panels integrate with Let's Encrypt for free SSL certificates and support installing commercial certificates. cPanel has a slightly more user-friendly SSL interface with AutoSSL. DirectAdmin offers comparable functionality via the built-in Let's Encrypt integration.
One-click installations
Both panels work with Softaculous, the most popular auto-installer. WordPress, Joomla, Magento, PrestaShop and hundreds of other applications install with a few clicks. There is no significant difference between the panels here - Softaculous works identically on both platforms.

The choice between DirectAdmin and cPanel has concrete consequences for your business:
Your profit margin
The price difference between the licenses indirectly affects your costs as a reseller. Providers that use DirectAdmin have lower server costs and can be more competitively priced. Performance compared: speed and server load
An often-underestimated aspect is the impact of the control panel on server performance. DirectAdmin is known as lightweight: it uses less RAM and CPU than cPanel. In practice this means:
- Faster panel access - the DirectAdmin dashboard usually loads in less than a second, even on busier servers. cPanel can feel slower with many accounts, especially the WHM interface.
- More room for websites - because DirectAdmin itself uses fewer resources, more CPU and memory remains for your customers' websites. On a server with 100+ accounts this is measurable.
- Lower base requirements - DirectAdmin runs comfortably on a server with 1 GB RAM. cPanel recommends at least 2 GB and performs better with 4 GB. This saves on your server costs if you use a VPS.
Combined with LiteSpeed - the web server Theory7 uses - DirectAdmin offers excellent performance. LiteSpeed is up to six times faster than Apache (which cPanel uses by default) at serving dynamic content such as WordPress pages.
Branding and white-label options
As a reseller you want the control panel to feel like your product. Both panels offer options for this:

- You focus on the enterprise market - large companies with their own IT departments are often already familiar with cPanel/WHM
In all other cases - certainly if you are just starting with reseller hosting - DirectAdmin offers the better value for money.
Switching: can you still do it later?
Yes, switching from one panel to the other is possible, but it is not trivial. A migration involves moving website files, databases, email accounts, DNS settings and SSL certificates. There are migration tools available that simplify this process, but you have to account for a day or two of work and possible short downtime per account.
Our advice: choose well at the start and stick with it. The control panel is a foundation of your hosting business. Switching often causes confusion for customers and unnecessary work for you.
