Step by step: resetting your Apple ID password
Method 1: Via iforgot.apple.com (recommended)
- Go to iforgot.apple.com
- Enter your Apple ID email address
- Click Continue
- Choose your recovery method:
- Receive an email
- Answer security questions
- Use two-factor authentication
- Follow the instructions to set a new password
- Sign in on all your devices with the new password
Method 2: Via your iPhone or iPad
- Go to Settings > [Your name] at the top
- Tap Password & Security
- Tap Change Password
- Enter your device passcode
- Enter your new password twice
- Tap Change or Change Password
Method 3: Via your Mac
- Click the Apple menu () > System Settings
- Click Apple ID > Password & Security
- Click Change Password
- Enter your Mac password
- Set your new Apple ID password
Alternative recovery methods
Requesting account recovery
If you don't have access to your trusted devices or phone number:
- Go to iforgot.apple.com
- Enter your Apple ID and click Continue
- Select Start Account Recovery
- Apple verifies your identity (this can take several days)
- You'll receive an email or text message when your account is ready for recovery
Via a trusted family member
If you use Family Sharing:
- Ask a family member to go to Settings > [Name] > Family Sharing
- They can help you reset your password from their device
No access to your recovery information?
If you don't have access to your:
- Recovery email address: Check old email accounts or contact your email provider
- Phone number: Contact your carrier to recover your number
- Trusted devices: Use account recovery via iforgot.apple.com
Important: Account recovery can take 1 to 14 days, depending on the information you can provide.
