Why a Microsoft account?

A Microsoft account gives you access to Windows, Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), OneDrive cloud storage, Xbox and much more. With 5GB of free OneDrive storage and access to the free web versions of Office, it is a must-have for everyone.

What do you need?

• A computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection
• An existing email address OR you create a new @outlook.com address
• A phone number (optional but recommended)
• 5-10 minutes of your time

Create your account step by step

Step 1: Go to the sign-up page

Open your browser and go to account.microsoft.com. Click Create an account or Sign in > Create one.

Step 2: Choose your email address

You have two options:

• Use an existing email address: Use your current Gmail, Yahoo or other email address
• Create a new Outlook address: Click Get a new email address for an @outlook.com address

Step 3: Create a strong password

Choose a password of at least 8 characters. Use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.

Step 4: Fill in your details

Enter your first and last name, followed by your country and date of birth.

Step 5: Solve the security puzzle

Microsoft asks you to prove that you are not a robot. Solve the puzzle or enter the characters shown.

Step 6: Verify your account

If you entered a phone number, you receive an SMS with a verification code. Otherwise, you receive an email.

Step 7: Account created

Congratulations! Your Microsoft account is now active and you can sign in to all Microsoft services.

Secure your account

Turn on two-step verification

1. Go to account.microsoft.com/security
2. Click More security options
3. Click Set up two-step verification
4. Choose the Microsoft Authenticator app or SMS codes

First steps after creating your account

• Explore OneDrive: You have 5GB of free cloud storage, go to onedrive.com
• Use Office Online: Use Word, Excel and PowerPoint for free in your browser
• Link Windows: Sign in with your Microsoft account on your Windows PC for syncing
• Download the Microsoft 365 app: Install the mobile Office apps on your phone

Can I change the email address of my Microsoft account? You can add an alias and set it as primary. The old address keeps working as an alias.

What is the difference between a Microsoft account and Microsoft 365? A Microsoft account is free and gives access to basic features. Microsoft 365 is a paid subscription with extra features and more storage.

Can I use my Microsoft account for Xbox? Yes! Your Microsoft account works for Xbox, Windows, Office, Skype and all other Microsoft services.
