Domain transfer problems and how to fix them
Transferring a domain to Theory7 usually goes smoothly, but sometimes you run into a problem. Below you'll find the most common problems and how to solve them.
Error message "invalid transfer code"
This is the most frequently reported problem with domain transfers. There are a few possible causes:
Known bug in the shopping cart
There is a known bug in the shopping cart's validation check. The transfer code can be correct, but the check still shows an error message. The solution is simple: just click "Next" to continue. The actual transfer validates the code again and then goes through just fine.
Other causes of an invalid transfer code
- The transfer code has expired (for some extensions it is only valid for 5 days)
- There are extra spaces before or after the code (copy-paste error)
- The domain has a transfer lock. Ask your current provider to remove the transfer lock
- The transfer code was already used for a failed transfer earlier. Request a new code
Domain is locked (transfer lock)
Many registrars put a transfer lock on your domain by default. You first need to turn this off at your current provider before you can transfer. Check the following:
- Log in at your current provider
- Look for "Transfer lock", "Domain lock" or "Registrar lock"
- Turn it off
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes and try again
Transfer is taking too long
How long a domain transfer takes depends on the extension:
- .nl domains: usually within 1 day (often within a few hours)
- .com, .net, .org: 5 to 7 days (you receive a confirmation email that you need to approve)
- .be domains: 1 to 2 days
- .eu domains: 1 to 5 days
- Other extensions: 5 to 7 days on average
Tip: for .com/.net/.org you receive an email from the current registrar asking you to approve the transfer. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.
Domain was just renewed or registered
A domain that was registered or transferred less than 60 days ago cannot be transferred again because of ICANN rules. Wait until the 60-day period has passed.
Whois details are incorrect
For some extensions, the whois details must match the details of the new owner. If needed, update your whois details at your current provider before you start the transfer.
